A 70-year-old man from Altrincham is one of two pensioners charged in relation to multiple claims of child abuse dating back to the 70s and 80s.

David Smith, of Gladstone Road, has been charged alongside Lotte McMurray, 90, of Manor Avenue in Sale, with two counts of assault, ill-treatment, neglect, abandoning a child, causing a young person unnecessary suffering and causing injury.

Smith’s charges relate to three victims and McMurray’s relate to two. They are due to appear at Manchester Magistrates’ Court on Thursday March 23rd.

Between September 2015 and April 2016, Greater Manchester Police received a number of reports of historic abuse between 1975 and 1982.

An investigation was launched and GMP’s investigation team Project Phoenix identified victims who were aged under 18 at the time of the offences.
