Trafford Council has told businesses affected by the Stamford New Road works that the road will be reopened two weeks EARLIER than planned – in just 10 days’ time.
Many Altrincham pedestrians were stunned today to see part of the relaid road being dug up again close to the junction with Moss Lane and Cross Street.
The road – one of Altrincham’s main arteries – has been closed in both directions between the junctions with Moss Lane and Regent Road to allow for the completion of a public realm improvements programme that originally began back in May 2016.
But Trafford has sent a project information letter to businesses and residents in the area – dated April 1st – that informs them the road will reopen again to two-way traffic a week on Saturday.
It reads: “The works to Stamford New Road, including the installation of the central granite median strip are now close to completion, and the road will be reopened to two way traffic on 15th April 2017.”
It adds that the reopening will be preceded by a “full road closure” between Saturday April 8th and Friday April 14th in order to “install the final road surfacing”.
Currently there is limited access to allow for business deliveries within the area.
The updated completion date was originally scheduled for April 28th, although some businesses were recently told that the work – being carried out by contractor J Cooney Ltd – would be finished by April 24th.
If the new completion date becomes a reality, it will represent a huge relief for businesses whose trade has noticeably suffered during the works.
The Stamford New Road work is the next phase of a £6m programme of improvements to public realm space in Altrincham town centre.
UPDATE 5/4/17:
Trafford Council has confirmed to us today that Stamford New Road remains “on schedule” to reopen on Saturday 15 April. It said the contractor made an error when installing some of the road setts and is required to rectify this, at their expense.
