Two students from Altrincham Grammar School for Boys have been selected to compete at the UK finals of a science and engineering competition.

Shafae Ali and Luke Kwan, both 18, will now compete for the title of Young Engineer of the Year at this year’s The Big Bang UK Young Scientists & Engineers Competition.

The pair have been announced as one of the winners of the regional heats at The Big Bang Fair North West with a project entitled ‘MyGlove’.

The idea came originally from watching sci-fi film Total Recall, where a piece of technology can be integrated into the palm of a hand, allowing individuals to communicate.

From this came MyGlove, a next generation Bluetooth Glove that wirelessly connects to your smartphone via Bluetooth to provide a very ‘hands-on’ hands-free experience.

Beth Elgood, director of communications at EngineeringUK, said: “The team from Altrincham Grammar School for Boys really impressed the judges with their project and we’re excited to see how they do at the finals at The Fair.”

The students will be invited to attend the competition finals, which are taking place at The Big Bang Fair at Birmingham’s NEC next month, where they will vie for the title of UK Young Engineer and GSK UK Young Scientist of the Year.
