Here are all the free family activities you’ll be able to do in Altrincham during the Easter holidays

A children’s book written by an author who lived on The Downs has inspired a series of family town centre activities to run throughout the Easter holidays this year.

‘Hare’s Altrincham Easter’ is based on a story by Alison Uttley, the author of the famous Little Grey Rabbit books, who lived on The Downs during the 1920s and 30s.

Organised by Altrincham Unlimited, activities will include a free family town trail, free children’s craft workshops, community art installations and a floristry workshop for the grown-ups.

Famous author Alison Uttley lived on The Downs during the 1920s and 1930s

Uttley’s book ‘Hare and the Easter Eggs’ tells the tale of Hare who ventures into town one night and is delighted to see a display of chocolate eggs in the window of a shop but doesn’t really know what they are.

Families are invited to help Hare to find his friends who are hiding in the shops around the town with a delicious Easter treat for every child who completes the trail.

There’s also a chance to get involved in the creation of two town centre community art installations which will each include Easter eggs created in a series of workshops.

Uttley’s book ‘Hare and the Easter Eggs’ has inspired this year’s Easter activities

Decoupage Easter eggs from the workshops will be added to those made by local school children, from Altrincham Church of England Primary School and Park Road Academy Primary School, to fill the trees on Shaw’s Road with a colourful Easter installation.

The local ‘Knit and Natter’ group has also been working on knitted eggs to hang in the trees and has created the knitted woodland creatures for the town trail.

The 2D Easter eggs from the drop-in workshops will be added to a design by local artist Gillian Parish to form a fabulous Easter window display on George Street.

There will also be a floristry workshop for the grown-ups

Kate Gerbich, Events and Communications Manager for Altrincham Unlimited, said: “Altrincham has a rich cultural heritage of which the author Alison Uttley is a part.

“We wanted this year’s Easter activities to celebrate this and for families to enjoy Altrincham during the Easter holidays. We have been working with our local schools, and one of our fabulous community groups, ‘Knit and Natter’ to create knitted and decoupage Easter eggs.

“The community art installations provide a great opportunity for everyone to get involved, either by taking part in one of the workshops or by coming into town to see the finished installations. We want to really add a splash of colour to the town centre this Easter.”
