The men, who were wearing balaclavas and hoods, entered McColls on Shaftesbury Avenue at around 9.45pm on Sunday evening.

They threatened staff and demanded cash before escaping from the store with a “large amount of cigarettes”.

No arrests have yet been made, and an investigation is underway.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: “Police called at 9.45pm on March 31 to reports of an armed robbery on McColls on Shaftesbury Avenue.

“Two men armed with a machete and a hammer entered the premises and demanded cash. They were wearing balaclavas and dark clothing.

“A large amount of cigarettes were taken and enquiries to trace the offenders are ongoing.”

No one was injured during the robbery.
