A new specialist gin bar has opened in Kings Court in Altrincham town centre.

Gin can…, which opens in the former High Society unit tonight, will stock an array of 66 gins initially.

It will also sell wine, Prosecco and cava and have a limited range of other spirits and bottled beers.

The owners of Cheshire Tap are behind the new launch.

Co-owner Martin Connolly said: “There’s a lot of places doing craft ales but we thought there was a bit of a gap in the market for a specialist gin bar.

“The demand for gin is showing no signs of let-up – sales are up 25% year on year and 52 new gin distilleries were opened just last year.

“We started off at Cheshire Tap with a house gin and one other gin, but now people are more discerning and are asking for different gins by name. People are also more interested in local gins, such as Manchester Gin or Timperley Gin, and are also more discerning about their mixers – they may want a Mediterranean tonic now or an elderflower tonic.”

The new bar will be open seven days a week, from 12 noon to 12 midnight, with a late licence until 2am on Fridays and Saturdays. It also has a sales licence and will be stocking varieties of gin not available in the supermarket.

Kings Court, off Railway Street, has re-established itself as a real destination in the last couple of years.

Alongside long-standing eaterie Kings Cafe and local favourite Cheshire Tap, there is now a football-themed craft ale bar, Libero, and the recently opened Batch Bottlestore, described as a halfway house between an off licence and tap room. The Ivy League, in the former Jaspers, is now a popular private party destination, too.

“It has changed a lot over the last few years,” added Connolly. “When we first opened it felt a bit edgy, and it’s taken time for people to come back. We still need to convince some people but it’s nothing like it was. But all the new places – Libero, Batch – have all brought something to the party.”
