Altrincham-based Seamons Cycling Club has been given the honour of leading out the final stage of the 2019 Tour of Britain, which starts in Altrincham on Saturday.
A group of 25 Seamons members, in their distinctive yellow and blue kit, will set off 15 minutes before the main peloton and cycle through Altrincham and Hale before peeling off and joining the spectators.
Seamons Cycling Club, which was formed in 1948 as an offshoot of the Seamons Moss community centre in Oldfield Brow, has grown to become one of the largest and most active cycling clubs in the North West, with a membership of over 240.
One Seamons cyclists, Keith Stacey, rode in the 1967 Tour of Britain, known then as the Milk Race. He joined the club in 1961 and was second in both the national 25-mile and 50-mile time trial championships. Now aged 74, Keith still rides with the club at least twice a week.
The final stage of the UK’s biggest and most prestigious professional cycle race – the country’s largest free-to-spectate sporting event – will be starting in Altrincham on Saturday, the first time the town has ever hosted the event.
