By David Prior at

There was a significant emergency response this afternoon after reports that a walker or cyclist had fallen in the Bridgewater Canal.

Police, fire and ambulance services attended the scene close to the Budenberg Apartments in Altrincham shortly after 3pm.

One eyewitness told us he had seen “numerous emergency vehicles including police, ambulance, three ambulance response units and a fire brigade”.

A spokesperson for the fire service said they had been called out to rescue a person from the canal.

By the time crews arrived from stations in Sale and Altrincham the person was out of the water.

The spokesperson said: “We were called at 3.0.6pm to an incident on Davenport Lane in Altrincham.

“Crews from Sale and Altrincham attended for about 40 minutes. It looks like a casualty was out of the water before we arrived.”

The incident is now closed.
