“The best thing is the community”: Altrincham named the best place to live in the UK by the Sunday Times

Altrincham has been named the Best Place To Live in the UK in the Sunday Times’ annual guide.

Altrincham has been named the Best Place To Live in the UK in the Sunday Times’ annual guide.

With unfortunate timing, given the shutdown yesterday prompted by the coronavirus outbreak, the town has come out on top in the influential survey, which bills itself as the “definitive guide to where to live in Britain”.

It’s a step up from two years ago, when the same guide picked Altrincham as the best place to live in the North West.

Calling Altrincham the “ultimate turnaround town”, it also praised its “much imitated, but never bettered” market, as well as the cafes and bars, independent shops, quality of schools, Dunham Massey and transport links.

The Sunday Times quotes Rita Adedoyin, who moved to Altrincham from London five years ago with her husband, a BBC sports journalist.

“We came here by accident, but we couldn’t have picked a better town,” she said.

“The best thing is the community. The people are really nice and there’s an unspoken camaraderie. Drivers will always let you cross the road with your children and every restaurant has a kids’ menu.

“After London, it was such a nice change to feel welcome and not to have to shush them all the time.”
