Meet the man behind the ‘Caravan of Love’ bringing coffee and grooves to Stamford Square

Independent record label Stutter & Twitch has launched a brand-new coffee caravan concept in Stamford Square in Altrincham town centre.

Independent record label Stutter & Twitch has launched a brand-new coffee caravan concept in Stamford Square in Altrincham town centre.

The Stutter & Twitch ‘Caravan of Love’ is now open, selling Grindsmith-roasted coffee, teas, cold brews and cakes from Stockport-based Silver Apples Bakery.

There’s also a collection of over a 1,000 vinyl records to browse and buy – with only one customer allowed at a time in accordance with current social distancing restrictions. Stutter & Twitch is also providing disposable gloves and sanitiser.

Stutter and Twitch was launched two years ago by Ryan Hayes, who has a background as a musician and producer.

Fuelled by a love of coffee and his experiences working in hospitality through various part-time jobs, Hayes bought the caravan on New Year’s Day 2019 and set about a lengthy restoration project.

Having postponed his Stamford Quarter debut until it was safe to do so, Hayes hopes his concept is as much a community project as a commercial one.

“We want to bring positivity to the high street at a testing time,” he said. “We obviously delayed our arrival at Stamford Quarter until we felt it was completely safe to open, and now that time has arrived it feels like we’re a very uplifting addition to the space.

“Considering the challenging times we’re living in, the feedback and community spirit we’ve received from our new customers is incredible. It’s been heartwarming to see people’s reactions to good coffee and uplifting music. It’s the little things that make a big difference.”

Hayes works with locally-based suppliers and chooses those that engage in sustainable and ethical practices themselves – like Grindsmith, who work directly with coffee producers across the world to pay fairer prices.

All packaging is recyclable and Hayes even cycles to and from work each day to reduce emissions associated with his operation.

James Tootle, senior retail and leisure manager at Bruntwood Works, which now co-owns the Stamford Quarter with Trafford Council, said: “It’s great to be supporting an exciting and innovative independent operator whose ambitions align with our own vision for The Stamford Quarter, especially at such a challenging time.”
