New Order and Smiths legend Johnny Marr are to play a special homecoming concert at Wythenshawe Park next summer.
The all-day outdoor concert, which follows the successful debut event headlined by Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds earlier this year, will take place on Saturday 24th August 2024.
New Order will headline the bill, playing their first full headline performance in the city since 2021, and be joined by a supporting bill including Johnny Marr - who lived in Wythenshawe from the age of eight - and adopted Manc Róisin Murphy.
From the ashes of the legendary band Joy Division, New Order have triumphed over tragedy to emerge as one of the most influential and acclaimed bands of all time.
This year, the band celebrated 40 years of their hit Blue Monday and announced reissued editions of their classic compilation ‘Substance 1987’, the band’s biggest-selling album to date.
This summer they headlined Barcelona’s Primavera Sound and started a UK and European tour earlier this autumn.
Support at the event will come from the band's good friend, Johnny Marr.
In the late 1980s, with his legacy already assured through his astonishing work with The Smiths, Marr and New Order’s Bernard Sumner formed Electronic, a synth-dance act that remained their primary side project throughout the 1990s.
Together, the pair released three albums and collaborated with fellow synthpop pioneers Pet Shop Boys.
This year, Marr announced a new album ‘Spirit Power: The Best of Johnny Marr’ to celebrate the first 10 years of his solo career.
Marr and New Order will be joined on the bill by Róisín Murphy, known in the 1990s as one half of the pop duo Moloko.
The Irish singer and songwriter recently released her acclaimed sixth studio album, Hit Parade.
Presale tickets for the event will be available from Monday 4th December at 10am. General sale tickets go on sale on Tuesday 5th December at 10am.
