Rishi Sunak visiting Altrincham today

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak met local residents and party members on an impromptu visit to Altrincham today.

At the start of what he yesterday confirmed would be an election year, the PM is evidently pursuing a strategy of getting out into the country and meeting voters.

Accompanied by outgoing Altrincham and Sale West MP Sir Graham Brady and prospective Conservative candidate Oliver Carroll, Sunak and his motorcade arrived in Altrincham shortly after 12.30pm this lunchtime.

He had come from Stockport, where he had faced shouts of 'resign!' as he left a cafe this morning.

But there was no such hostility in Altrincham, as he met Altrincham Market traders Sarah Kelly, of homeware and lifestyle accessories brand The Sculpts, and Josef Schindler, owner of Joe & Co denim brand.

He chatted to other residents, including a small girl and a slightly bemused dog, before walking down Greenwood Street and Shaw's Road to meet Alex Cox, owner of Bloomin Flowers.

He then walked back up to Market House, where he ordered a pie from Great North Pie and sat down with local party activists. He left at 1.15 after 45 minutes in the town.

Here's a selection of images from his trip (copyright Altrincham Today):
