Altrincham school on government list of schools affected by dangerous concrete

Timperley-based Altrincham College is one of 147 schools on a list published by the government this lunchtime of schools affected by reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC).

The government has confirmed that an Altrincham school is one of the schools affected by dangerous concrete.

Timperley-based Altrincham College is one of 147 schools on a list published by the government this lunchtime of schools affected by reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC), the light-weight material at risk of dangerous collapse.

The government says this particular type of concrete has now been classed as an immediate safety risk and affected schools have been instructed to take instant action.

Nineteen schools have had their start to the new term delayed, according to the Department for Education's data.

But Altrincham College is one of those schools which has been able to open this term as normal, with all pupils in face-to-face education.

Another local school, Sale Grammar School, is in a similar position.

A spokesperson for Trafford Council said: “We can confirm that two schools in the borough, Sale Grammar and Altrincham College, have been impacted by the government guidance on reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC).

“We would like to reassure parents, carers, pupils and school staff that both schools will open as usual next week. Mitigating measures are in place and the schools are safe.

“The safety of pupils and staff remain the priority of the schools and the council.”
