At long last! Work on the £70m Altair scheme is to begin on Monday

Work on the long-delayed Altair project is to FINALLY get underway.

Nikal, the company behind the £70m scheme, has this afternoon received final approval to start work on phase one, called Altair One, with “immediate effect”.

Altrincham-based McGoff Construction, who replaced Eric Wright Construction as developer in April, will now move on to site on Monday to start enabling works on a block of 59 one and two-bedroom apartments. Completion is scheduled for September 2021, and 32 of the 59 apartments have already been reserved.

This first stage of works will require the temporary closure of Moss Lane to vehicles from the junction of Oakfield Road towards Stamford New Road. This closure will take effect from Monday 30th September for approximately 12 weeks. During this time, a diversion will be in place.

We’ve previously reported that the apartment block will have a “boutique hotel style entrance”, with each apartment featuring “large windows, versatile open plan kitchen and living spaces”, and most will have a private balcony.

Specification includes contemporary kitchens by German designers ‘Hacker’ with integrated appliances, Amtico flooring, Villeroy & Boch bathrooms plus contemporary style brassware by Grohe and Vado.

Many have cast doubt on whether the scheme – for which Nikal first won the green light as far back as 2008 – would ever go ahead.

It has been beset by delays for years, as well as questions over whether the scheme would suit the rapidly regenerated Altrincham town centre.

But the work is finally set to go ahead. Trafford Council has already granted planning consent for the second phase of Altair, encompassing four buildings housing 85 high quality apartments, 44,000 sq ft of leisure retail space and 18,000 sq ft of Grade A office accommodation, all around a new central “boulevard”.
