Five Minutes With... Chiropractors Ray Ng and Matthew Glancy, from BDC Health

Originally setting up in 2018, they're now based close to Altrincham Interchange.

Chiropractors Ray Ng and Matthew Glancy have run BDC Health in Altrincham since setting up in 2018.

Now based a short walk from Altrincham Interchange, they say they’re as passionate as ever about improving spinal health and wellbeing of local residents.

We had a chat to find out more.

ALTRINCHAM TODAY: Can you introduce us to BDC Health - how long have you been practising and what services do you offer?

MATTHEW GLANCY: We originally opened BDC Health in 2018 on The Downs before moving to our current location on Stockport Road, by the bridge to Altrincham Metrolink. We have an experienced team of chiropractors and massage therapists and use a whole host of techniques to tailor treatment appropriate to the patient in front of us.

AT: Can you tell us a bit more about your own backgrounds and expertise?

RAY NG: Originally from Norway with Chinese heritage, I became a chiropractor due to my own positive experiences with chiropractic care. Since 2011, I've lived in various UK cities before settling in Manchester. Previously, I worked in Sheffield, including with local sports teams like the Sheffield Eagles and Sheffield Steelers.

I specialise in treating spinal and joint issues, as well as shoulders and hips, using techniques like myofascial release and graston technique, sports tape and guided exercise advice. My goal is to empower patients to overcome injuries and pain, enabling them to return to their favourite activities.

MATTHEW: Originally from Timperley, I studied my chiropractic degree in South Wales before studying a further degree in Pain Management with UCL in London. The Royal College of Chiropractors recognises me as a pain specialist chiropractor. I use a range of techniques that may include acupuncture, hands on spinal mobilisations and exercise advice. I take on a broad range of patients from mechanical low back pain or neck pain to patients with complex and chronic pain conditions.

AT: You were previously based on The Downs in Altrincham but have now moved to Stockport Road - can you tell us a bit more about your clinic and the team you have based there?

MATTHEW: Moving to Stockport Road has been great. It’s given us more space to have a fab team. We have chiropractors (myself, Ray and Sophie) and we also offer a variety of soft tissue therapy such as sports, cupping and deep tissue through our massage therapist, Jayne. I also have to mention our front desk team, who keep the place running!

AT: What are the most common problems that patients come to you with?

RAY: We have a diverse range of patients, spanning all ages from six to 80 years old. In our clinic, we encounter a variety of complaints, including those related to the lower back, mid-back, neck, shoulders, hips, ankles and other more complex cases.

Patients often seek chiropractic care for general spinal complaints and joint issues. While these are the most common problems, it's important to note that individual patient needs can vary, and each case may require a tailored approach to treatment.

AT: What can new patients expect from a first consultation?

MATTHEW: A thorough assessment! The first consultation involves discussing the issue or issues that have brought the patient to us, and taking their medical history. We then will do some tests on their nerves, muscles and joints before sitting down to discuss what we have found and what we can do to help. All being well, we aim to start treatment on the first consultation.

AT: How does a prospective patient know whether to see a GP or a chiropractor?

RAY: At times, we receive patient referrals from local GPs, and we take these referrals seriously. Additionally, we conduct thorough screenings to identify patients who may require further evaluation by a GP before commencing treatment at our clinic.

We are actively refining a triage system that prioritises the health and wellbeing of our patients. Our focus remains on addressing muscular, skeletal and nerve issues, ensuring that patient care is at the forefront of our practice.

AT: Many people put up with back or joint pain, but to what extent can a chiropractor resolve or alleviate their symptoms?

MATTHEW: What we often hear from our patients is that they wished that they had come sooner! More often than not there is something that can be done to improve the comfort and quality of life of those who come to see us.
