Trafford’s first social homes in over a decade are going to be built in Timperley

A development of 30 new homes in Timperley has been approved by Trafford Council, the first social homes to be built in Trafford for more than a decade.

An application by Trafford Housing Trust to develop land off Carrfield Avenue in Timperley into 20 one-bed and 10 two-bed apartments has been unanimously approved by Trafford’s planning committee.

The land has lain dormant since two apartment blocks on the site were demolished in 2003, and THT bought the land with the intention of developing affordable housing in 2016.

There are currently 2,300 people waiting for a one-bedroom property in Trafford, and a report prepared as part of the application said the properties will “greatly assist customers on Trafford Council’s housing register”.

The site is currently vacant apart for an electricity sub-station, and some cable diversion will be necessary should the application be approved.

The three-storey development will also include parking and cycle storage for 30 bikes.

Coun Andrew Western, Trafford Council leader, said he was “delighted” to see the application go through.

He said: “These are the first new social housing units built in Trafford for over a decade (excluding specialist supported housing etc) and I’m particularly proud because they have been funded from the council’s Affordable Housing Fund.

“Lots of work has gone in to this from officers and members at the council along with colleagues from the Housing Trust who are the developer. We promised to prioritise building social housing and I’m thrilled we are now seeing evidence of our work in this area as we directly fund social builds in Trafford.”
